Court says Srinivasan guilty of conflict of interest

Posted by needo is best 2024 at 11:04 PM 0 Comments
(Agencies) NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court ordered Thursday world cricket chief Narayanaswami Srinivasan to give up his stake in the Indian Premier League if he wanted to be re-elected head of the country’s powerful board.
The court found Srinivasan guilty of a conflict of interest for having commercial dealings in the sport while head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by owning an Indian Premier League franchise.
“Srinivasan or any other administrator can’t contest elections (to the BCCI) (while) they have those interests,” the two-judge bench was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.
The court was ruling on the findings of a panel it appointed last year to investigate betting and other scandals in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).
Srinivasan, 70, is managing director of India Cements which owns the Chennai Super Kings franchise captained by India skipper Mahendra Dhoni.
Although the court on Thursday absolved Srinivasan of any specific wrongdoing, it struck down an IPL rule which allowed BCCI members to own a team in the popular Twenty20 tournament.
Srinivasan, appointed International Cricket Council chief last year, has not yet commented on whether he will run for the BCCI president’s post at elections in six weeks time for a second term or give up his stake in the Chennai Super Kings.
The court had barred Srinivasan from carrying out his duties as BCCI president, a post he held since 2011, until it delivered its final verdict.
The court also appointed Thursday a panel headed by a former chief justice of India to recommend changes to BCCI rules to avoid any future conflict of interest by its members.
The court agreed with the Mudgal panel that Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan took part in illegal betting while a team official of the Chennai Super Kings, as did Raj Kundra, owner of the Rajasthan Royals.
The sixth IPL season last year was mired in controversy after police launched legal proceedings against several officials and cricketers, including former Test fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, for illegal betting and spot-fixing.
International news organisations including Agence France-Presse have suspended on-field coverage of matches hosted by the BCCI since 2012 after the board imposed restrictions on picture agencies.

How a bird became the talk of the cricket world during the Stars v Scorchers game

Miracle at the MCG Amazing scenes in the Big... by bestoft20

A seagull has made a miracle recovery after being struck by a ball during the KFC T20 Big Bash League clash at the MCG tonight. The bird was sitting in the outfield at mid-wicket when he copped the full brunt of a pull stroke by Perth Scorchers batsman Adam Voges. Melbourne Stars fielder Rob Quiney immediately signalled that he feared the worst for the stricken bird as it lay motionless on the ground, before he delicately carried it over the boundary rope and placed it back on the turf. But just minutes later, the bird came to its senses and started the walk along the boundary line, much to the delight of the huge MCG crowd. Not only was the bird back on its feet, but it also had Quiney in his sights..

I’ll try to break AB de Villiers’ fastest century record: Shahid Afridi

Posted by sahill786 at 1:35 PM 0 Comments
Afridi had announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the 2015 World Cup in December.

Karachi: Allrounder Shahid Afridi said he will try to wrest back the record of scoring the fastest ODI hundred when Pakistan tours New Zealand and during the World Cup to make it a memorable farewell for him and his fans from 50 overs cricket. Afridi has announced he will retire from ODIs after the World Cup but continue to play T20 cricket.
The seasoned allrounder, around whom they are a lot of expectations in the World Cup, said he would not be surprised if a day came when even chasing down totals of 350 or 400 would become a norm in 50 overs cricket.
"After the rule changes in 50 overs cricket and with the popularity of T20 cricket things are now tilted in the favor of batsmen and in coming days we could see even totals of 400 go down easily," he said.

Brilliant runout in Big Bash League 2015

5.3 Rimmington to Head, widish length delivery as he drives that quite away from the body, outside edge runs to the right of third man, Fawad Ahmed chases it and the direct throw found Ludeman short of the ground as he skips out late for the third which looked almost bizarre with that good throw. 23/2

India vs England 3rd Game , Tri Series

Posted by needo is best 2024 at 1:14 PM 0 Comments
England 1 for 156 (Bell 88*, Taylor 56*) beat India 153 (Binny 44, Finn 5-33, Anderson 4-18) by 9 wickets.

A year and three days later, Finn announced his comeback to top-flight cricket with a maiden five-for that ripped apart India's batting order after they had recovered from a shaky start. Finn's charge turned 1 for 57 into 5 for 67, and 5 for 137 into 153, their lowest all-out score against England. That after India had decided to bat on a hard Gabba surface only to be undone by the extra bounce on the pitch. Ian Bell helped England chase the target down in 27.3 overs, claiming the crucial bonus point and a big net run rate boost.

Smith to lead Australia, Warner rested

Posted by needo is best 2024 at 1:02 PM 0 Comments
Steven Smith will lead Australia in Friday's tri-series match against England in absence of suspended George Bailey, Cricket Australia said on Tuesday.
Smith to lead Australia, Warner rested
Opening batsman David Warner has also been rested from the one-day international at Hobart to recover from a sore hamstring, CA added in a statement.

Shaun Marsh and Cameron White will replace Bailey and Warner in the squad for Friday's match, when Australia will target their third consecutive victory in  the tri-series.
The International Cricket Council banned Bailey, who was leading the side in place of injured regular skipper Michael Clarke, after Sunday's match against India for  a second over-rate offence in 12 months.
"Steven's appointment was a straightforward decision given the excellent impression he made in charge of the side during the ... Test series when he stepped in for the injured Michael Clarke," national selector Rodney Marsh said.
"It is unfortunate for George Bailey that he will miss the match in his home state but in Steven we have a dynamic player who leads from the front, by example, and we look forward to him doing so again on Friday."

AB de Villiers gets salute for his ‘hell of an innings’ from Corey Anderson

Posted by needo is best 2024 at 12:53 PM 0 Comments
NELSON: Corey Anderson saluted AB de Villiers on Monday for a “hell of an innings” after the South African broke the New Zealander’s record for the fastest century in a one-day international.
De Villiers took just 31 balls to smash his way to 100 against the West Indies in Johannesburg on Sunday, five balls faster than Anderson when he set the record against the same opposition in Queenstown a year ago.
“Records are there to be broken and congratulations to AB, it was obviously a hell of an innings,”Anderson said in Nelson where New Zealand are preparing for the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka.
De Villiers went on to score 149, including 16 sixes and nine fours, from just 44 balls which impressed Anderson whose 131 not out against the West Indies came from 47 deliveries and included 14 sixes and six fours.
“To get 149 off 44 is probably even more special,” said the big-hitting New Zealander who described breaking records as just “one of those things that happen”.
“You’re in the zone I guess and you feel like every ball’s probably going to go to the boundary, and when you miss-hit it, it sort of misses a fielder and it tends to go for four. It’s one of those days where it all comes off.”
As incredible as de Villiers performance was, Anderson does not believe the new record is unbreakable.

England v India, Carlton Mid Tri-Series

39.3 overs India 153 (Binny 44, Finn 5-33, Anderson 4-18) v England
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details

" Finn, Anderson run through India "

ENGLAND: IR Bell, MM Ali, JWA Taylor, JE Root, EJG Morgan (capt), RS Bopara, JC Buttler (wk), CR Woakes, SCJ Broad, JM Anderson, ST Finn
INDIA: S Dhawan, AM Rahane, V Kohli, SK Raina, MS Dhoni (capt, wk), AT Rayudu, STR Binny, AR Patel, B Kumar, Mohammed Shami, UT Yadav

It was here in the nets at the Gabba a year and four days ago that Steven Finn couldn't land the ball on the strip. He was offered an early leave from what was a trying tour of Australia. He took the offer. In the match that followed, an England attack lacking a tall bowler helplessly saw James Faulkner pull of aheist with No. 11 for company.A year and three days later, Finn announced his comeback to top-flight cricket with a maiden five-for that ripped apart India's batting order after they had recovered from a shaky start. Finn's charge turned 1 for 57 into 5 for 67, and 5 for 137 into 153 all out. That after India had decided to bat on a hard Gabba surface only to be undone by the extra bounce on the pitch.India had to contend with inauspicious news just before the match.

Their centurion from the MCG ODI, Rohit Sharma, had to pull out with a sore hamstring, which meant Ajnikya Rahane was required to fill in as opener again. It is, however, the other opener that has been India's problem on this tour. Against a rejuvenated and accurate James Anderson, who is returning from injury himself, Shikhar Dhawan stood no chance. It only seemed a matter of time that Anderson would get one right and Dhawan would nick off. It happened the first time Anderson bowled to Dhawan. By the time Anderson finished the over in which Dhawan got out, his figures read 2-2-0-1.Rahane and Ambati Rayudu - the replacement for Rohit - batted edgily but stayed together for 12 overs, adding 56 runs.

They had seen off the threat of Anderson and scored well against Stuart Broad, who didn't seem to be at his most intense. There were no easy runs on offer though. The two had to repeatedly leave their crease to try to put the England bowlers off their lengths, but they succeeded too infrequently. When Rahane tried to do the same to Finn, the ball got too big, and the inevitable top edge appeared.
Virat Kohli, who for some reason has given up the No. 3 slot despite having been the best ODI No. 3 in the world at that moment, soon edged to the keeper, playing a nothing dab despite the presence of a slip. Finn's extra bounce again did the trick. Kohli's movement deep into the crease just before Finn had delivered hinted at desperation at how difficult scoring runs had been.Suresh Raina, who scored a half-century in Melbourne to rescue India, provided a reminder of how difficult India had found Moeen Ali in the English summer, walking past an offbreak. The movement out of the crease again came too early. Soon Rayudu too failed to handle Finn's bounce as he looked to run one down to third man.India had lost four wickets in the space of 27 deliveries, but MS Dhoni and Stuart Binny stalled the momentum with a 70-run partnership. Binny ended up with the top score of 44. Yet when India called for the Powerplay one over before the mandatory 36th over, they were staring at Finn and Anderson again. With the field coming in, the singles dried up, and Finn conceded just the one run in the 35th over. Anderson dropped a return offering from Dhoni first ball into his second spell, but conceding just a single he ensured the pressure was on.

Finn came back to clean Dhoni up with a bouncer that was gloved to the keeper. Next ball he moved round the wicket to burst through the defence of Akshar Patel, who now has two ducks in two innings in Australia. Bhuvneshwar Kumar avoided the hat-trick, but couldn't save the top of his off stump from Anderson in the next over. Two good catches - by Eoin Morgan running back from mid-off and by Moeen circling under a swirling ball at the edge of the midwicket boundary - ended the Indian innings in a hurry. England needed to knock off these runs in under 40 overs to claim the bonus point.

The Englishman had the superb figures of 3-19 off his first five over spell as the Indians had no answers to his steep bounce.
Spinner Moeen Ali created some magic of his own when Suresh Raina (1) stepped out of his crease and was left stranded after being deceived by a delivery which spun past the outside edge.

They were nice scenes for England but were awful for India which is still yet to win a game on tour this summer.

Description:
Chris Gayle blasted 77 off 31 balls as the West Indies beat South Africa by four wickets in the first Twenty20 international at New lands on Friday.
The big left-hander thrashed eight sixes and five fours in a brutal assault on the South African bowlers.
His innings included an extraordinary sequence during which he hit 52 runs off 11 balls -- five sixes, five fours and a two.
After making only one run off the first six balls he faced, he reached his half-century off 17 balls.
Only India's Yuvraj Singh, who reached his half-century off 12 balls against England in Durban during the 2007 World Twenty20, has reached 50 off fewer deliveries.
"It's a captain's nightmare," admitted South African skipper Faf du Plessis. "I thought we posted a really good total."
West Indian captain Darren Sammy said victory helped heal some of the wounds caused by South Africa's comfortable 2-0 win in the preceding three-match Test series.
"We were determined to make up for the Test series," said Sammy of Friday's winning team which featured only four of the Test side.
Despite Gayle's assault, there were only four balls to spare when the West Indies passed the target of 166.
Leg-spinner Imran Tahir led the South African fight back, taking three for 28 in four over, including the wicket of Gayle, who gloved an attempted reverse sweep to wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk.
Gayle was second man out with the total on 114 off the last ball of the 11th over.
At that stage it looked as though the tourists would romp to victory. But four more wickets fell before Kieran Pollard pulled David Wiese to the midwicket boundary off the second ball of the last over.
Rilee Rossouw anchored South Africa's total of 4-165 with an unbeaten 51, made off 40 balls with five fours.
The most spectacular batting of the South African innings came from Du Plessis, who hammered 38 off 20 balls, with five fours and two sixes.
West indies set World Record of chase 231 Against South Africa.
West Indian left-arm opening bowler Sheldon Cottrell took two for 33, while Jason Holder opened the bowling and conceded only 20 runs in an unbroken four-over spell, while claiming the wicket of Van Wyk.

" Misbah-ul-Haq to retire from ODIs after 2015 World Cup, will continue playing Tests "

According to news reports, a top official of the PCB said Misbah had conveyed to the board chairman that he would like to announce his retirement from ODIs through the board and not individually.
“Unlike Shahid Afridi who went ahead and announced he would retire from one-day internationals after the World Cup Misbah has said he would like to do it through the board,” the official was quoted as saying.

To date, he has played 29 Twenty20 internationals, most recently coming in 2012.
“I took the decision to retire after much thought and feel this is the best time to go from ODIs,” Misbah said. “The World Cup is my last ODI venture.”
“He has been a big source of inspiration for the Pakistan team since the spot-fixing scandal and it is his personal decision to retire from ODIs after the World Cup,” Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan said.
The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand starts on February 12. Pakistan’s opening Pool B game against India is in Adelaide on February 15.
“He is keen to lead Pakistan in the Test series against Sri Lanka, England and India this year,” the official disclosed.
Misbah has been Pakistan’s Test captain since late 2010 and the ODI captain since mid-2011.
He stated that due to Misbah’s decision the board had already asked the national team head coach Waqar Younis and chief selector Moin Khan to submit a comprehensive post World Cup cricket plan under which appointment of new captains will take place.
Asked if the PCB felt Misbah would be fit in time for the World Cup, the official said the Pakistan captain was confident and working hard on his rehabilitation process.
