Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq accepts blame for T20 England loss

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq took full responsibility for the team’s failure to win the final Twenty20 match and the series at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Monday night.

Needing 130 runs for victory, Pakistan fell short by five runs after being in the hunt for the most part. They needed 23 runs from the last three overs and had seven wickets in hand, but could only muster 17 runs and lost three batsmen. 

Giving full credit to the England bowlers for pulling off a sensational win, Misbah said: “We made an effort but the England bowlers bowled the last three overs exceedingly well by mixing up the slower ones. We, who were in the middle, are responsible for the defeat as we could not finish the game. I should have finished the game, but I did not have any answer to their excellent bowling.”

Misbah felt the match was within’s Pakistan reach till the 18th over when 17 were needed off the last 12 balls but Stuart Broad’s over, in which he conceded just four runs, sealed their fate. “Until the 17th over, it was very much gettable with so many wickets in hand. Then Dernbach bowled a good over and the second last over bowled by Broad simply pushed the game away from us.”

Calling the defeat one of the biggest disappointments of his career, Misbah felt serious measures were needed to fix batting problems.

Meanwhile, England’s Man of the Match Kevin Pietersen, who struck a valuable knock of 62 not out, said his team produced an “exceptional end”. He added: “I think full credit should go to the bowlers who bowled brilliantly throughout the whole series.”

Captain Broad waxed lyrical over Pietersen’s innings, which he felt set up the game. “It was a tense game and KP showed his experience. Once we got to 130 I thought it was a competitive total and if we took it as deep as possible we stood a chance. Jade (Dernbach) was fantastic, he showed his T20 class here.”

Misbah-ul-Haq has led an impassioned defence of his captaincy and urged the media not to destabilise Pakistan cricket by pursuing "their own agendas".

What should have been a moment of celebration for Misbah and his team was soured when Pakistan's captain was asked about his own position in the press conference following victory over England in the first of three Twenty20 internationals.
It is not hard to understand why Misbah might have been irritated. He assumed the captaincy of Pakistan in late 2010 with the team disgraced and defeated. Not only that, but he was denied some of the nation's best players due to their involvement in the spot-fixing controversy.
He responded better than most could have dreamed possible. Not only did Misbah restore the good reputation of Pakistan cricket on the pitch, he has done so off it, too.
He has led Pakistan to five Test series victories out of seven - the other two series were drawn - including the recent 3-0 whitewash of England, the No. 1-ranked Test team. On Thursday he led Pakistan to victory over the No.1-rated T20 team in world cricket and afterwards vented his frustration at the media - and the Pakistan media in particular - who seem to want Shahid Afridi restored as captain.

England produced world-class death bowling coupled with moments of brilliance in the field to snatch a five-run victory in the deciding Twenty20 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and seal the series 2-1. With Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal together, needing 35 off the last five overs, Pakistan were in control but Stuart Broad and Jade Dernbach showed nerves of steel to finish the tour on a high.

Broad bowled the 16th and 19th overs which cost just four runs apiece and that included a misfield by Jonny Bairstow at long-on in the penultimate over which gave away a boundary. Broad removed Akmal, who skied a catch to long-off after missing the first two balls of the 19th over, and Bairstow redeemed himself in the last with a powerful throw to Craig Kieswetter which found Shahid Afridi short of his crease.

Dernbach, who bowled the 17th over for six runs, was left with 13 to play with for the last and was in control except when a slower ball looped out short to be called wide. That left Pakistan needing eight off three deliveries but Hammad Azam and Misbah could only muster two singles before a trademark slower ball from Dernbach castled Misbah and set of wild celebrations from the bowler.

England under Stuart Broad has clinched a hat-trick of winning tosses in this 3-T20I Series and will bat first in the third and final match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Today’s match will be the decider of the Series after England had leveled it at 1-1 following an impressive victory day before yesterday at Dubai.

England look to be the favourites to win the third and final T20I after posting a fighting total of 129 for 6 on what is a sluggish pitch at Abu Dhabi. Opener Kevin Pietersen carried his bat responsibly to ensure that England got what they wanted on a pitch that was very slow with low bounce. Pietersen batted all the 20 overs to remain unbeaten on 62 from 52 balls with 6 fours and a last ball six of the English innings.

Apart from Kevin Pietersen, none of the English batsmen really got going on a difficult pitch to bat on at the Sheik Zayed Stadium. Pietersen who has been in-form scoring two centuries in the One Day Series batted according to the pitch conditions and played most of his big shots perfectly after picking up vacant spots in the outfield. Saeed Ajmal was once again amongst the wickets for Pakistan taking 4 for 23 in four overs.

After two whitewashes we now have a series decider following 

England's slick victory in the second Twenty20 international 

in Dubai. Twenty20 matches can swing on the smallest of  

factors, but the intensity and sharpness of England's display 

on Saturday suggests they are the side finishing stronger.

A series victory will help consolidate England's position at the 

top of the rankings, although the bigger picture, and it applies 

to both teams, is putting in place plans for the World 

Twenty20 in Sri Lanka during September and October. 

Twenty20 internationals are few and far between - 

three-match series are a new breed in this format - so each 

game is important towards building a unit.

England learned quickly between the first and second 

matches in Dubai while Pakistan regressed quite significantly, 

especially with the bat. Jonny Bairstow showed that England's 

young players are soaking up their experiences while the 
incisiveness of the bowling attack is now consistent across all 
three formats.

Bairstow lifts England to 150

Jonny Bairstow revived memories of his brilliant England one-day debut with a maiden international fifty in Dubai to leave Pakistan chasing 151 for a victory that would give them the Twenty20 series.

Bairstow is that rare commodity for England, a power hitter, and after he squirted Umar Gul into the legside to secure his half-century four balls from the end of the innings, he emphasised the fact it by slapping a slow ball from Gul, a shot he did not really middle, over long-on for six. 

Bairstow's 60 off 46 balls, studded with two sixes and five boundaries, helped England recover from a precarious 79-4 to post a challenging 150-7 before Finn claimed 3-30 to bowl Pakistan out for 112 in 18.2 overs at Dubai Stadium. 
Gul at the death - predominantly bowling yorkers with a hint of reverse swing - was again excellent and it did nothing for the reputation of Buttler's trademark shot, the step to leg and horizontal-bat shovel over his left shoulder. As Gul hit the stumps with a low full toss, the shot had got Buttler out on two successive occasions.

Even Cheema, who would have been identified by England as the weak link, displayed his skill with a deceptive slower ball to strike Stuart Broad's off-stump. As for Hammad Azam, his bowling had been overlooked by Misbah in the first game on the grounds that the situation was too tight. Presumably he expected this one to be tight, too, because he overlooked it again.

For the first time since Pakistan and England locked horns in the United Arab Emirates, the atmosphere came alive. The advent of Twenty20 attracted a raucous crowd under Dubai Cricket Stadium's ring of fire and such was the delight at the outcome that Pakistan might almost have imagined they were at home.
Stuart Broad, England's third captain in 17 days, inserted Pakistan, perhaps sensing their batsmen were low on confidence, but Awais Zia's debut had been eagerly awaited and he did not disappoint, playing with wanton aggression before he was undone by a slower ball from Steven Finn.

Sixes in the hands of Zia smack of youthful confidence; when Misbah and Shoaib cleared the ropes it felt like needs-must, a calculated show of aggression once a full risk assessment had been carried out. Shoaib slugged Samit Patel over long-on, Misbah put him over long-off. Thanks to some magical bowling later in the night, they judged their requirements perfectly.

Gul and Ajmal deny England at the death

Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal bowled superbly at the 

death to inspire Pakistan to an eight-run victory over 

England in the first Twenty20 international in Dubai.

Ajmal then bowled a brilliant 19th over of the 

innings, conceding just four runs, to put Pakistan on the brink of victory with England needing 18 off the

Former Pakistan players blame selection for loss in ODIs From England

The former Pakistan legspinner, said it was time Pakistan had separate squads for different formats. The squad for the ODI series against England was similar to the Test one, with Hammad Azam, Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik added, and Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Talha making way. The uncapped Awais Zia is in the Twenty20 squad.

"I think the time has come to form specialised teams for each format of the game; we have enough players to carry out that plan," Qadir said. "We need to get the right man for the right format."

Rather than criticise Pakistan for their loss, Qadir chose to praise England for bouncing back after being whitewashed in the Test series. "England's bowlers were outstanding and consistent," he said. "They turned the tables on Pakistan after the Test series.

"I have always been impressed by the English players' mental toughness. Despite their worst ever showing in the Test series, they bounced back hard and I am afraid they could further dent Pakistan in the upcoming Twenty20 series. The onus is now on the Pakistan team management to motivate the team to bounce back, and they too have the ability to do so."

Qadir also criticised the team selection, saying Pakistan played too many spinners, expecting them to repeat the success of the Test series, despite the pitches being livelier for the ODIs. "I think Pakistan failed to take full advantage of the pitches for the one-dayers; we never changed our focus from the Tests to the ODIs as we kept on expecting spinners to play a key role." 

Iqbal Qasim:-

 The former Pakistan spinner, echoed Qadir's thoughts on picking a separate team for ODIs and also disagreed with the team selections during the ODI series, pointing to the fact that Pakistan played just one fast bowler in the fourth match.

"Like other teams we should also designate some players for Tests, some for one-dayers and some for Twenty20 because this has proved beneficial for other teams," Qasim said. 

Imran Khan :- 

 The former Pakistan captain, backed Misbah-ul-Haq to continue leading the side in all formats despite the drubbing. "Misbah needs to show more aggression but it's too early to write him off," Imran said. "Misbah must bat up the order to get good totals. If one captain is doing well in all three forms of the game then there is no use having separate captains." 

Pietersen century seals whitewash for England

 

What a difference a few days makes. It was suggested that Kevin Pietersen had the last two matches of this series to save his one-day international career and less than week later he has back-to-back hundreds to his name - the second a career-best 130 - a spring in his step and a strut at the crease as he guided England to a whitewash against Pakistan with four balls to spare.

Pietersen became the second England batsman in the series, following captain Alastair Cook, to hit consecutive hundreds and it was the second time Pietersen had achieved the feat, following the South Africa series in 2004-05 at the start of his career. It's long been a criticism of England's one-day game that there aren't enough individual three-figure innings so it will provide huge satisfaction for Andy Flower and Graham Gooch, shortly to become the full-time batting coach.

The series, too, is a huge feather in the caps of Flower and Cook. The 4-0 scoreline is England's first whitewash against anyone other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe since they beat Australia before the 1997 Ashes. That was one of many false dawns for England's one-day side and there needs to be more evidence to find out how this unit develops, but having lost 5-0 in India last October this has been the ideal response.

This was a better display from Pietersen than his hundred on Saturday and it was also his longest ODI innings. Early on his lost regular partners - Cook fell second ball of the innings - and the pitch, used for the second time in three days, was worn and a touch slower. Pakistan packed their side with five spinners and just one quick but only Saeed Ajmal, who removed Eoin Morgan and the debutant Jos Buttler in the space of three balls to leave England wobbling on 68 for 4, posed a significant threat.

Pietersen's main moment of concern came when he was saved by the DRS on 80 after getting into a horrid tangle trying to scoop Abdur Rehman over his shoulder. He was given out lbw by umpire Zameer Haider but replays showed he'd been struck outside off stump. Last week Pietersen spoke about DRS being his biggest challenge; here it was his biggest saviour. The review system made an important intervention when Samit Patel, on 5 and with England needing 44 off 40 balls, was given lbw by Haider but had also been struck outside the line. It wasn't a great evening for the umpires with Cook earlier given not out before Pakistan reviewed. 

The scoring rate had seized up as Azhar approached his maiden ODI fifty and Shoaib Malik struggled to time the ball. The sense with Azhar, albeit in the very early stages of his career, is that he doesn't have a range of gears to move through in the one-day game. Malik does not have the excuse of inexperience to fall back on and his return to Pakistan colours has not been a happy one in this series. Having used up 33 deliveries for 23 he missed a sweep against Briggs in the spinner's last over. When a team can win without three of their main bowlers it bodes well for the  future.

This time it's Pakistan who have only pride to play for. England are in search of a whitewash that will give some solace following the reversal in the Test series and, given how they have dominated in the one-dayers so far, they are strong favorites to complete the clean sweep.

A 4-0 margin will move England up to fourth in the ICC rankings, nothing to write home amount in itself but a sign that progress is already being made in the 50-over format. The conditions they have faced in this series haven't quite replicated the subcontinent at its toughest - that will come against India early next year - but neither is the next World Cup going to be held on dust bowls.

Pakistan need more from Mohammad Hafeez. Since he made 88 in the opening Test against England he has had a number of starts without building a substantial innings. In the third ODI he had taken the attack to Stuart Broad only to fall two overs later for 29. He's wasting form that Pakistan can ill-afford not to make the most if. His offspin has also lost some of its effectiveness as England's batsmen take a more positive approach.

Team news

It's anyone's guess what Pakistan will do, especially as a number of players are suffering from flu. A dead ODI would appear the perfect chance to play Hammad Azam, the allrounder, while it also offers the chance to look at Junaid Khan, perhaps at the expense of the struggling Gul.

England's only questions are rest and rotation. Jos Buttler and Tim Bresnan were both expected to figure in this series but injuries meant being sat on the sidelines. It's now hard to find space in the team, although Bresnan for James Anderson remains a logical switch.

Pitch and conditions

The surface for Saturday's game produced more pace and bounce than has been seen throughout the tour which certainly didn't suit Pakistan's game. Neither did batting first help them much. The same pitch is due to be used again which means there may be a little more assistance for the spinners.
