Wasim slams critics, says he’s available to help Pakistan

KARACHI:(Reuters) Former captain Wasim Akram is eager to help the Pakistan players salvage their World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand, he said on Tuesday.

Pakistan lost their opening match of the tournament by 76 runs to arch-rivals India.

“The irony is neither the Pakistan cricket authorities nor anyone in the team has approached me to help or advise them,” Wasim said in an interview to a local news channel.

One of the world’s great fast bowlers during his pomp, Akram is working as a broadcaster at the World Cup.

“I am here in the World Cup and I want to go and help our players adjust and do well in the tournament in these conditions. But I can’t do this without an invitation,” he said.

The 48-year-old Akram, who took 414 Test and 502 one-day international wickets, helped Pakistan win the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

“I am often criticised for not helping Pakistani players but giving tips to players from othercountries,” he said.

“This is unfair as even now if they ask me I will go and help in anyway because I know a lot about modern day cricket and players in this World Cup and I want to see Pakistan reach the knockout stage.”

Pakistan play West Indies on Saturday with group matches against South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Ireland to follow.

“Our batsmen will keep on struggling until they also play on the front foot,” Akram said.

“Against India we struggled because the batsmen were afraid to come forward as if the ball was a grenade,” he added.

“I have played a lot in Australia and New Zealand but I don’t know why the board and management is shy of approaching me for help,” said Akram who captained Pakistan to the 1999 World Cup final.

“I don’t want a job in Pakistan cricket. I just want to see our team in the knockout stage. Then anything can happen.”

Bangladesh 267 (Mushfiqur 71, Shakib 63, Shapoor 2-20) beat Afghanistan 162 (Nabi 44, Mashrafe 3-20) by 105 runs

Afghanistan's World Cup debut was the story of the day in Canberra but Mashrafe Mortaza's Bangladesh won by 105 runs to assuage worries of an early meltdown at the hands of the newcomers.

Bangladesh stuttered to 267 all out and only reached that score through a 15-over blaze from Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. Then it was turn of Mashrafe to sink Afghanistan to 3-3 in the third over. Recovery took Afghanistan a long time, long enough to push the asking rate well out of reach. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 162 but would have taken plenty of positives from their first outing.

Those, though, would be restricted to their bowling effort. Their 268-run chase didn't go to plan. Mashrafe removed Javed Ahmadi at the end of the first over, the batsman's attempt to work the ball into the legside causing him to pop a simple return catch off the leading edge. The other opener, Afsar Zazai, fell next ball, trapped leg-before. It became 3 for 3 when Asghar Stanikzai edged Mashrafe to first slip where Mahmudullah grabbed it after a bit of a fumble.

Samiullah Shenwari, who had been removed from the bowling attack after seven balls for transgressing into the danger area twice, led the recovery with the bat. He struck the team's first boundary, a crash through the covers off Mortaza. Nawroz Mangal helped him pull the team out of trouble, adding 62 for the fourth wicket. The required rate, though, was on the rise and the pressure led to the wicket of Mangal, who holed out at deep square-leg. Rubel took the catch but hurt his leg in the tumble. Shenwari was then run out in the 26th over when Sabbir's pick-up and throw from the leg-side boundary found him some way short of the crease.

Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran added 58 runs for the sixth wicket before Najubullah fell leg-before to Shakib in the 37th over. Mashrafe then picked up his third wicket, dismissing Nabi for 44 off 43. From seven down, the Afghanistan tail struck a few blows before the innings came to an end in the 43rd over.

It was apt that the first Afghanistan player known to the wider world, Hamid Hassan, bowled his country's first delivery in the World Cup. Hassan, decked with warrior-like face-paint, and Shapoor Zadran kept the Bangladesh openers quiet for 14 overs, before Mirwais Ashraf picked up both Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque in the space of two overs. The opening pair batted circumspectly and did well to avoid giving away early wickets.

Tamim, though, grew restless, and went hard at Ashraf, surviving a caught-behind appeal when he appeared to edge the ball and a close run-out after a mix-up with Anamul. The latter took his own time until Ashraf trapped him leg-before with a superb inducker.

Ashraf bowled a superb first spell, and Bangladesh were under his spell until Soumya Sarkar hammered 15 off his ninth over to spoil his figures. He had given away only 17 from his first eight overs. Soumya and Mahmudullah added 50 patient runs for the third wicket before the pair fell in Shapoor's second spell.

The fourth wicket, at the start of the 30th over, brought together Mushfiqur and Shakib at a crucial stage, when more wickets could have left them vulnerable to the sort of collapse that haunted them in 2014. The team's most successful batting partnership took control almost instantly, picking up singles and doubles regularly before plundering 48 runs in the batting Powerplay. The pair moved to their respective fifties and had begun launching into the Afghanistan attack when Shakib fell in the 45th over, having made 63 off 51 balls, with six fours and a pulled six over deep square-leg. The fifth-wicket pair had added 114 runs in 15.3 overs.

Bangladesh immediately lost their way, as Sabbir Rahman struggled through his 2.1-over stay, keeping Mushfiqur at the non-striker's end. Mushfiqur struck a four as soon as he got back on strike, but fell soon after for a 56-ball 71, slogging one down deep midwicket's throat in the 48th over. Mashrafe struck three fours towards the end, but even then Bangladesh had only made 73 in their last ten overs while losing their last six wickets.

Having bowled with discipline for the first 29.1 overs of the Bangladesh innings, Afghanistan gave away too many four balls during the Shakib-Mushfiqur partnership. They seemed to tire in the field as well, conceding overthrows and letting balls go through their legs. Afghanistan also failed to use a referral in the 41st over, when Aftab Alam had an lbw appeal turned down. Replays suggested the ball was going on to hit the stumps, and had hit Mushfiqur's front pad before his bat.

This is one of the funniest incidents happened of the playing fields of cricket. It was a post match press conference and the management of Pakistani team sent Umer Akmal to address it. Umer we all don’t know why came willingly to do so.
Umer was there to address the press conference; he managed to answer all the questions. Detailed were the answers to the questions been asked in Urdu but the questions asked in English were remained answer less.

Pakistan fielding coach resigns on ‘misbehavior’ of players

SYDNEY: A cold attitude of senior players forced fielding coach of national cricket team Grant Luden to resign from his post, ARY News reported.

Grant Luden has submitted his resignation to Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shehryar Khan after three senior players – Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shahzad – misbehaved with him.

According to sources, the coach had reportedly grilled the trio over poor fielding.

Following the team’s failure to make the World T20 semi-finals, Grant Luden, the former fitness coach of Bangladesh, was appointed as the fielding coach on March 30, 2014.

NZ stutter to win after dominant bowling

A collective groan went up at the University Oval when Brendon McCullum chose to bowl and the worst fears of the full-house crowd seemed to be coming true when Scotland slumped to 12 for 4 against the new ball. A 97-run partnership between Matt Machan and Richie Berrington ensured they wouldn’t set any unwanted records, but the rest of their batting fell away and New Zealand wrapped up their innings in just 36.2 overs.

A target of 143 was never going to test New Zealand, but they made the chase unnecessarily interesting with their recklessness. Of the seven wickets they lost, only that of Grant Elliott wasn’t thrown away. Three batsmen were caught on the fence, two gave their wickets away minutes after being dropped, and even Kane Williamson – solid, reliable Kane Williamson – couldn’t resist an ugly heave across the line.

In the end, New Zealand wrapped up the win with more than half their overs remaining, but the team management will surely wonder how their approach transformed so dramatically between innings.
There was certainly no complacency at the start of the match. Scotland had beaten Ireland and run West Indies uncomfortably close during their warm-up games, and New Zealand retained the same eleven that had taken on Sri Lanka. Tim Southee and Trent Boult were switched on right from the start, and Boult struck with the first two balls he bowled, classic left-arm inswing that showed up the front-and-across shuffles of Calum Macleod and Hamish Gardiner.
McCullum stationed five slips and a gully for the hat-trick ball, which was too wide outside off to really test the left-handed Machan. The attacking field remained in place for the rest of the over, and Boult beat Machan’s edge three times in three balls.
Two balls into the fifth over, Southee was on a hat-trick, after Kyle Coetzer had clipped him straight to short midwicket and Preston Mommsen had been pinned in front by one that nipped in off the pitch. Scotland were sinking rapidly.

At the toss, McCullum had suggested the pitch would assist the seamers for the first half hour or so before easing out, and the extent of movement slowly decreased as Machan and Berrington settled in. After the initial plays and misses, Machan’s front foot began foraying down the pitch, and a well-timed square drive eased some of his nerves. Adam Milne replaced Southee in the 11th over and produced the first real bad ball of the morning, a wide half-tracker that Berrington slashed up and over backward point. In the next over, Machan put Boult away for two more fours through extra cover.

There were no more boundaries for the next eight overs but Machan and Berrington were looking increasingly assured as Scotland reached 60 for 4 at the end of the 20th. Southee came back into the attack for the 21st over and the fifty partnership came up with both batsmen hitting him for fours. His next over was still more expensive, Machan hooking him for six and Berrington rolling his wrists over a powerfully struck square cut.
Daniel Vettori was typically tight in his first six overs but he too took some punishment in his seventh, when Machan brought up his fifty with a nurdled single before Berrington celebrated his partner’s achievement by tonking the next ball down the ground for six. Scotland brought up 100 in the next over – the first fifty had taken them 101 balls, the second only 59.
New Zealand turned to Corey Anderson to try and break the partnership, and he went one better by dismissing both batsmen, both out to top-edged pulls. Their dismissals ended Scotland’s resistance, and the last six wickets fell for 33 runs. Anderson finished with three wickets, as did Vettori, whose drift and changes of pace proved far too vexing for the Scotland lower order.
