West Indies stun England to level series

A previously unknown left-arm spinner from St Lucia, produced a remarkable spell of 3 for 9 in four overs as West Indies secured a shock 25-run victory in the second Twenty20 at The Oval. After being asked to bat first on a slow and low turner, they struggled to a total of 113 for 5 and looked set for a second heavy defeat in three days. But instead, they rallied supremely to bowl England out for 88 with more than three overs of their allocation to spare.

With England set to embark on a tour of India next week, and with the defence of their World Twenty20 crown taking place in Sri Lanka in 12 months' time, this was a match that will have caused a few jitters in the team thinktank. On the same pitch that proved receptive to spin in Friday's opening game, both teams stacked their side with slow bowlers, but it was England's new-look order that ultimately dealt with the conditions the worst.

England's innings began inauspiciously, as Mathurin's high action and appreciable turn gave Friday's matchwinner Alex Hales a strokeless start to his innings. He had managed just two runs from his first eight balls when Krishnar Santokie, another West Indian debutant, and this time one who hasn't played first-class cricket, bowled him with a beauty that nipped through his defences and into off stump.

Four balls later, Mathurin made his first big impression, as Craig Kieswetter - with two fours to his name - was so bamboozled by a slider that he stood his ground after being bowled, in the vain hope that the keeper had been the one to whip off the bails. Ravi Bopara was then spun out by a beauty in Mathurin's next over, and at 26 for 3 at the end of the Powerplay, the match was exquisitely in the balance.

Ben Stokes did his utmost to change the dynamic of the innings, as he greeted Devendra Bishoo with the most violent assault of the night - a six and two fours in the space of a first over that went for 17, but at the other end, Mathurin twirled away without anything being allowed to break his zone. Jonny Bairstow, the hero of the Cardiff ODI, might have been tempted to block out the final four balls of his spell, but instead he dropped to his knees for a sweep, and was bowled for 4.

Stokes continued to provide England with a boundary-finding option, but as had been the case in the West Indian innings, working the singles proved to be a problem, not least when the less-than-fleet-footed Samit Patel entered the fray. He was run out by a direct hit from gully as he belatedly set off for a leg bye and, one over later, Stokes responded to three dot balls in a row with a missed sweep that left him lbw for 31.

The arrival of Tim Bresnan at No. 8 was arguably the most encouraging sight for England at such a stage, but even his big-match experience couldn't rescue his side. He drove on the up to that man Mathurin at long-off to depart for 2 from 4, and instead it was the rookie alliance of Jos Buttler and Scott Borthwick who hauled England back from the depths of 60 for 7. With more pace on the ball now that the spinners' overs were running out, they added 23 in 17 balls before a brilliant shy from Darren Sammy at mid-on left Buttler stranded short of his crease, and England deep in the mire.

Another calamitous run-out followed one over later as England began to panic. Graeme Swann turned down a single to cover with Borthwick stranded at the wrong end of the pitch, and the captain hadn't scored from either of his two deliveries by the time England's No. 11, Jade Dernbach, was also sent on his way via a run-out. Earlier in the match, Swann had chosen not to bowl his full quota of overs to give his team-mates the practice. It was a quiet night for the noisiest man in the camp.

On a bad night for England full-stop, Borthwick's performance with the ball was undoubtedly the highlight. In a solitary over against Ireland last month, he conceded 13 runs in unfavourable conditions. Tonight he went for 15 in a full four-over quota, without conceding a single boundary. His maiden international wicket was a collector's item as well, a perfectly pitched googly that bamboozled Johnson Charles, West Indies' opener, and bowled him for 21.

After allowing West Indies to rattle to 42 for 0 in four overs against the seamers on Friday, Swann cannily chose to open with the spin of Patel. His first ball was swept for four by Charles, the last of his quota was nailed through the covers for another boundary, and in between whiles he was clubbed for six by Charles over long-on. But the remainder of his 21 deliveries conceded a grand total of six runs, as West Indies found no way to keep the strike rotating.

Even Marlon Samuels, the most renowned batsman on display, found it tough to raise his game in the circumstances. He struggled for timing initially and had made 11 from 20 balls before drilling his first boundary at the end of the 15th over, and though he lifted his game in the closing stages, a run-a-ball 35 appeared to have done little more than hoist the West Indies total into triple figures. That, however, proved to be decisive.

England's fielding, such a strong factor in their victory on Friday, was once again sharp, with Hales sliding round the deep midwicket boundary to cling onto a slog from Christopher Barnwell, before Borthwick at long-off swallowed a firm lofted drive off Sammy to give Bopara his fifth wicket of the series, and his first of the night. Dernbach was England's other wicket-taker, with an early lbw to remove Dwayne Smith, but at the end of a memorable summer, it was West Indies who were left to cavort around the outfield. Their season is only just beginning, but what a fillip this will be as they head off towards Dubai, Bangladesh and beyond.

Saudi government officials have reportedly apologized to their nation and said that they would pay Kaffarah of (1 Billion SR riyal as expiation for breaking the fast during the holy month of Ramadan) for the entire Saudi nation. The Government gave order to the people and citizen of Saudi Kingdom to do fasting of one day because Eid Al-Fitr was not supposed to be on August 30/2011.

The society had said that people actually saw the planet Saturn and not the crescent moon that marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

Hatem Auda, director of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, had said that astronomical calculations by scientists of the institute noted that the first day of the Eid was Wednesday, August 31, making Tuesday, August 30 the last day of Ramadan for the Hijri year of 1432.

Various news agencies such as Al-Arabiya and Aljazeera have also reported that the planet Saturn has been mistaken for the Hilal (crescent moon), and this means that what was announced as the first day of Eid al-Fitr was supposed to be a day of fasting, rather than celebrations.

According to the Aljazeera report, the source of these problematic Hilal-sighting is from Sudair, a region located approximately 150km North of the capital Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The vice-president of Jeddah Astronomy Society reassured that it is impossible to view the Hilal with the naked eye.

While a number of Muslim countries like Iran announce the new crescent only on the basis of frequent sightings by the people, astronomy societies and clerics inside their borders, many others rely on the sightings done by Saudi Arabia and announcement of the Eid crescent by Riyadh.

Thus, those Muslim nations who have followed the Saudi suit as usual and celebrated the last Tuesday as Eid al-Fitr are now angry with the Saudis as Eid al-Fitr is the biggest eve for the worldwide Muslim community.

Starved dogs eat owner

 JAKARTA: Seven dogs starved of food and water for two weeks are suspected of eating their Indonesian owner after he returned to his hometown in Manado from a holiday, local media reported.


A neighborhood guard was curious when he saw luggage lined up at the front of Andre Lumboga's house, days after the 50-year old arrived back home. He approached the house, smelled something foul and called the police, according to a report.

"His skull was found in the kitchen, and his body was found in the front of his house," Eriyana, a local police chief in Batam, an island off Sumatra, told VIVAnews website.

Lumboga arrived home last Wednesday, but his body was just discovered on Monday.

"We suspect that the dogs were hungry, so they attacked Andre, because they had not been fed for 14 days," he said. Police also found bones of two other dogs, believed to have also been eaten by the hungry canines.

Lumboga was from northern Sulawesi island, a predominantly Christian area, where the local spicy diet is famous in Indonesia for including dogs, bats and forest rats. (Reuters)

Pompeii.

Pompeii, a major Roam Empire port near Naples and Mount Vesuvius, was completely covered with ash and destroyed in 79 A.D. by an eruption of the volcanic mountain.

Mount Vesuvius, now dormant, heaped upon Pompeii, with area of 44 hectares, and two hectares of underground cellars, ash and pumice four to six metres in depth. The whole city disappeared from the face of the earth.

It remained completely covered for 1500 years and was accidentally discovered in 1599.

Since then archaeologists have been excavating intact cadavers of humans and animals. Sporadic enforcements to buildings and walls were made to prevent them from collapsing.

Today, Pompeii attracts approximately three million tourists annually and the nearby village Pompeii benefits greatly from tourism.

Trading Greeks or Phoenicians who at the time were the leading merchants in eastern Mediterranean funded Pompeii in the sixth or eighth century B.C possibly.

The city-prospered ad grew under Roman occupation and rule. Romans built the theatre, a swimming pool (natatorium) for bathing, the aqueduct, and the house of gladiators, which unfortunately collapsed in 2010 due to poor maintenance.

Romans also helped lay out the city better, encouraged wine making, introduced the idea of street vending and trattoria (informal food and drink places), and pubic houses for prostitutes (House of Chaste Lovers) where they even had “menus” regarding clients’ position preferences. It collapsed in 2010 due to negligence.

Pompeii

Pompeii’s wine industry was well equipped (according to prevailing standards of the time). The wines were well made in earthenware fermentation vessels buried underground. Like in every site in Italy, you must hire an official guide to explain the history and point out all the historically important places.
Frankly, while in many cities and sites an official guide may be replaced by a thorough guidebook, in Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum (another city that was completely buried by the same eruption) a local guide is a good “investment”.

is a world heritage site under the protection of the Ministry of Culture of Italy, but unfortunately, due to budget constraints, maintenance work has been very erratic and for long stretches non-existent.

Now approximately 30 per cent of Pompeii is considered adequately secured. Expert claim that approximately 350 million Euros are needed to safeguard the excavated ancient city, neither the Italian government nor UNESCO has the means to do it.

For this reason alone, individuals interested in archaeology should make a point of visiting the ruins now before it is too late.

And who knows when or whether Mount Vesuvius will again erupt?

Karan Singh is the world’s biggest baby

India’s tallest woman, who stands 7ft 2in, claims her baby has grown to 3ft 2in in only 10 months. Svetlana Singh says she hopes her child Karan, who already weighs three-and-a-half stone, will be the tallest man in the world. Speaking in the family’s home in Meerut, outside Delhi, Mrs Singh told how the hungry boy needs feeding an astonishing 20 times a day, Telegraph

Weighing in at a burly 7 stone and standing 4ft 5in tall, two-and-a-half-year-old Karan Singh is believed to be the tallest toddler in the world.

Almost the same height as his 10-year-old neighbours in Meerut, India, Karan is twice the size of children his own age – and his giant mum believes this is just the start.

Dwarfing her husband, 7ft 2in Shweatlana Singh is Asia’s tallest woman, and the proud mum is praying her baby outgrows her.

Growing boy: Karan, sat with more friends at nursery school, already weighs seven stone ‘He was born big and is already half as tall as me, so I believe he will outgrow me soon,’ said Shweatlana.

Karan, who was twice the size of normal babies at birth – 13lb and 2ft – never fitted baby clothes and now wears clothes designed for children three or four times his age.

‘I had to throw away the baby clothes I’d bought for him and go to the market again. The people in the hospital told me to buy clothes designed for one-year-old kids,’ laughed Karan’s proud father.

At 6ft 7in Sanjay Singh towers over most people but is dwarfed by his wife and expects Karan to soon catch up.

The giant family spends £124 a month – almost three times their neighbours’ budgets – keeping everybody fed, including 20 jars of honey.

‘When Karan wakes up in the morning the first thing he does is ask for food and tea. Whenever he sees anybody eating, he asks for food,’ said Shweatlana. ‘He’d never stop eating if I didn’t force him to.’

The constantly hungry toddler devours five apples in a go, craves sweets and demands ten teaspoonfuls of honey a day.

‘In the afternoon when he asks for food, he will consume two plates of rice, two buckets of vegetables and three chappatis (bread) with curd,’ said Sanjay.

When Karan first went to kindergarten teachers took one look at the giant toddler and refused to admit him, insisting he must be old enough for primary school.

‘Only after I showed them his birth certificate did they agree to admit him in nursery,’ said Sanjay.

Mum Shweatlana, a basketball player who is preparing to represent India in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi next month, said: ‘Whenever we go shopping we buy the biggest clothes we can get for him and in five months time he grows out of them,’ she said.

‘His height is an advantage and if he wants to play basketball in future I will send him to America for studies there.’
